Earthquakes is an important location for Oligocene
cetacea.
There is a walking trail to fossil whale bones
revealed in a rock a few metres below the cabbage tree seen
in this picture.

Mistakenly believed to be caused by an earthquake,
the rock formations are due to huge blocks of Otekaike limestone
tumbling when the land slumped.
The result is a spectacular photographic site
for contrasted sky, rock, light and darkness effects.
